PolarLynx™ lenses for the most demanding glare on earth
There are conditions where ordinary sunglasses stop being enough: open water at midday, a glacier under full sun or a snowfield at altitude where light arrives from above and reflects back from below with almost no loss. In these environments, the eye receives light from every direction at once, and the intensity can be punishing.
PolarLynx™ is Vuarnet’s answer to the extreme end of that spectrum. It combines three technologies, each addressing a different component of the problem, in a single mineral glass lens.
Three technologies in one lens
Most lenses do one thing. PolarLynx™ combines three because extreme glare has more than one cause.
- Polarization removes the reflected horizontal light that water, snow and wet surfaces throw back at you.
- Lynx™ contrast engineering helps preserve definition and depth perception rather than simply darkening the scene.
- Bi-shaded silver mirror reduces transmitted light more heavily at the top of the lens, where the sky is brightest, and less at the bottom, where you need to read the surface ahead.
This bi-shaded gradient distinguishes PolarLynx™ from a conventional mirrored lens. A uniform mirror darkens everything equally, including the ground or water in front of you. A graduated mirror manages the brightest part of your field of vision without sacrificing the area you are actively reading.
Where PolarLynx™ belongs
PolarLynx™ is engineered for excess light, not for its absence. In flat or overcast conditions, Skilynx™ is the more appropriate lens.
Who are PolarLynx™ lenses for?
Marine and open water
Sailing, offshore fishing and extended time on open water expose your eyes to some of the most persistent reflected glare in any outdoor environment. Discover the Fishing & Water Sports collection.
Alpine and glacier conditions
At altitude, UV intensity rises by roughly 10% per 1,000 metres, while snow reflects a large proportion of light straight back towards the eyes. Here, eyewear becomes protective equipment rather than an accessory. Explore Altitude, Alpine, Glacier and the Extreme Conditions collection.
High-intensity sport
Cycling, running and other outdoor sports performed in sustained bright conditions benefit from reduced glare and visual fatigue. Explore the full Sport sunglasses collection and Running & Cycling.
PolarLynx™ sunglasses for men and women
Men’s PolarLynx™ sunglasses
Men’s models include wrap and sport profiles that limit peripheral light alongside the frontal glare addressed by the lens.
Women’s PolarLynx™ sunglasses
Women’s PolarLynx™ sunglasses combine the same lens performance with adjusted frame geometries and lighter constructions for extended wear.
For maximum peripheral coverage in exposed conditions, see wrap-around frames and side-shield models.
When PolarLynx™ is more lens than you need
PolarLynx™ is a specialist lens, and specialist solutions are not universally appropriate.
- In flat or overcast light, it may reduce contrast you cannot spare.
- Polarization can dim LCD screens, which matters for chartplotters, GPS units and dashboard displays.
- In icy conditions, polarization can mask the reflections that reveal black ice.
- For general daily wear, the intensity reduction is often greater than the conditions require.
For everyday use, consider Lynx™ or Pure lenses. For changing conditions, photochromic lenses adapt across the day. See also our guide to polarized or non-polarized sunglasses.
Why mineral glass matters in extreme light
In the harshest light conditions, optical quality is not a refinement: it can determine whether vision remains comfortable and usable. Distortion, scatter or inconsistency are amplified when your visual system is already under strain.
Vuarnet mineral glass delivers the optical precision these conditions demand. Depending on the lens, it absorbs up to 94% of infrared radiation - the heat component of sunlight that contributes to dryness and fatigue during long exposure - and naturally resists the scratching that comes with mountain and marine use.
Made in France, built to last
Every PolarLynx™ lens is produced in Vuarnet’s EPV-certified manufacture in Meaux, France, through a 17-step process. Each lens carries the engraved V on Ski hallmark that guarantees its origin and optical quality.

Vuarnet FAQ: PolarLynx™ lenses
What are PolarLynx™ lenses?
PolarLynx™ combines polarization, Lynx™ contrast engineering and a bi-shaded silver mirror in a single mineral glass lens. It is designed for the most extreme glare conditions in marine and alpine environments.
What does bi-shaded mean?
The mirror coating is graduated: darker at the top of the lens, where the sky is brightest, and lighter at the bottom, where you need to read the water or ground surface. A uniform mirror darkens both equally.
What is the difference between PolarLynx™ and Skilynx™?
PolarLynx™ is made for excess light: bright sun on water or snow. Skilynx™ is designed for flat, overcast light where contrast has collapsed. They solve opposite problems.
Are PolarLynx™ lenses suitable for driving?
They control glare effectively, but the intensity reduction is generally greater than daylight driving requires. Polarization can also dim dashboard displays. See our Everyday & Driving collection for driving-specific options.
Can I get PolarLynx™ lenses in my prescription?
Yes. Vuarnet mineral lenses are available in prescription through authorised Vuarnet opticians. Learn more about prescription options.
